Because we have a dream – a dream that needs you to come true!

Before we started our firm, we made a list of all the things people told us about their relationships with their accountants.  Sometimes people were happy, but often they were not. As a result of our research, we know that our standards for timeliness, accuracy, accessibility, performance, and caring must be exceptional.

We want to be the ‘dream firm’ that truly puts clients first, that actually delivers on all promises – even if that means we stop taking on more work until we can add team members who share our values.

Our dream is to treat you so well that you never hesitate to refer your colleagues, family, and friends.

Our commitment is to achieve those exceptional standards and make this dream come true, first for you and then for us.

Ida Colby, CPA, CA

Ida Colby is a skilled and talented Chartered Professional Accountant with a flair for problem solving. Because she loves a challenge, no problem is too tough. She has worked in the trenches in public accounting for over 27 years, starting with a small CGA firm in administration and quickly progressing to a senior accounting technician’s position. After nine years, she moved to a larger CA firm of six partners and was soon promoted to a manager’s position; finishing that 14-year career as a senior manager.

Ida’s vast experience with audits, tax planning, review engagements, and financial statements has prepared her well for her new role as a partner with Colby·Steckly Chartered Professional Accountants. Because she has dealt with such a wide variety of businesses over the years, her clients can count on her to know what to do when an accounting problem crops up.

Her counterpart, Jennifer Steckly, had this to say about Ida:

“Ida has impeccable attention to detail and superior organizational skills. Her thirst for knowledge along with her creative approach enables her to explore accounting and tax issues from a variety of angles until she finds the optimal solution. I love her happy attitude and wonderful sense of humor. She’s great to work with.”

Away from the office, Ida relaxes by playing piano and tending her garden. She and her husband love to camp, ride quads and travel.

Jennifer Steckly, CPA, CA

Growing up in an entrepreneurial household, Jennifer learned to live and breathe business. She started her bookkeeping training in her mother’s company when she was only 12. There she formed a strong work ethic and developed her talent for speed, accuracy, and insight regarding client files.

After two years of science and a year of commerce at MacEwan University, Jennifer moved to the University of Alberta, achieving her B.Com, Accounting Major. Her CA designation soon followed.

As a consistent high achiever, Jennifer combines her in-depth knowledge of bookkeeping processes with her accounting education and experience. The six partners at her previous firm often expressed appreciation for her ability to accurately and quickly complete complex and difficult files. That, combined with her excellent client relationships enabled her to move quickly from articling student to accounting associate to manager.

Ida Colby, Jennifer’s business partner, finds it exciting to work with Jennifer: “I couldn’t ask for a better partner. She is passionate about everything she does. Her knowledge of accounting and auditing is second to none.  Jennifer may be young, but she has so much practical experience; it shines through in all aspects of her work. She has an engaging way with clients and provides wonderful professional advice when needed.”

Jennifer’s enthusiasm for fitness shows up at the gym where she trains as a runner. She enjoys the ski slopes in the winter and the golf course in the summer. She also loves the theater and live music. When she was only six, she sang the Canadian national anthem at an Edmonton Oilers hockey game.

Renee Frechette

As the new administrator for Colby•Steckly, Renee Frechette is right where she wants to be. Since she thrives on variety and being busy, she eagerly rises to the challenge of daily workloads.

Renee’s administration experience in Ft. McMurray and Edmonton combined with her event planning courses from NAIT helped give her the edge she needs to do her job well. With her affinity for computers she is able to quickly learn the new systems and accounting programs at Colby•Steckly. “I’ve just enrolled in the Business Management Diploma Program at MacEwan University and I’m excited to apply all that I learn back here at work. Becoming an office manager is one of my goals.”

A people-person, Renee likes to interact with clients to make their day better. “It helps that I’m really organized. I find it easy to adapt to whatever comes up. When clients ask questions I can’t answer, the partners are always available.”

It’s Renee’s dog, Sterling, a 90 lb. Weimaraner, who keeps her on the run at home. The music scene is also a big part of her life, as is time spent with family and friends.

Derek Isaman, B.Comm

Accounting Technician

With a CA for a father, the love of numbers was bound to rub off. Derek Isaman got his first taste of accounting when he worked in his dad’s firm as a teen. After high school in Wainwright, Alberta, Derek enrolled in Engineering. That first year demonstrated that business was his true calling, so he switched faculties. He graduated from MacEwan University with a B.Comm, Accounting Major in 2012.

At Colby•Steckly, Derek thrives on the challenge of complex files. “I have always liked solving puzzles,” says Derek. “It’s rewarding to find mistakes clients were unaware of and help them get back on track.”

Derek’s detail orientation leads him to quickly spot patterns in a file which then shows the type of mistakes to look for. Future forecasting is another skill that he brings to the job. “I’m really good at planning forward.”

As an Accounting Technician at Colby•Steckly, Derek finds lots of support. “Jennifer and Ida are great teachers.”

While reading, playing video games, and watching movies – especially science fiction – are all ways he relaxes, Derek’s favorite time at home is spent cooking. “My signature dish,” he says, “is Maple Salmon.”

David Marchand, B.Comm

Accounting Technician

David Marchand is a very curious person who loves to know what makes things tick. When he enrolled in the Business Program at MacEwan University, David assessed his classes based on his preferences and his skill set. He graduated in 2016 with a B.Comm and a major in accounting.

David brings his curiosity and his talent for problem-solving to Colby•Steckly. “A client’s process may or may not be on track,” said David. “I’m always on the lookout for paths that lead me to the source of the issue.”

Unlike many people, David thrives on daily routines. “Mastery of formulas and procedures is what I’m after. A consistent routine provides me with that opportunity.” David also likes learning something new every day – a common occurrence at Colby•Steckly where each day is different and the client base is very diverse.

An Accounting Technician, David is enjoying the close-knit team who provide plenty of support. “It’s very welcoming here. Work feels like fun!”

Away from work and depending on the season, you’ll find David either ice skating or golfing. Family camping is another favorite. With a varied group of friends, he enjoys being super social when the occasion arises. He also values his “alone” time.
